Monash South Africa

Monash South Africa (MSA) students are recognised internationally because of the skills and training that they receive during their years of study. Our graduates are globally relevant and make an impact in the various sectors in which they serve.

Founded by Monash University in 2001, MSA became the first institution in Sub-Saharan Africa to join the Laureate International Universities network in 2013, which has a presence in 25 countries, serving over a million students globally across 70 institutions and online.

You'll find us in Ruimsig, in the province of Gauteng, 25 kilometres northwest of the Johannesburg city centre. Our attractive, secure, state-of-the-art campus is complete with student accommodation, computer labs, restaurants, high-tech lecture theatres and sports facilities, including a gym.

Our programmes are designed to give you choice and flexibility so that you can design your study to meet your academic, personal and professional aspirations. You could build a career in fields as varied as journalism, marketing, economics, business systems and public health.

Our global network

Studying at Monash South Africa (MSA) gives you access to a well-established global network. Through a number of academic activities such as study abroad programmes or international lectures, you are granted opportunities to develop your knowledge by connecting with global minds to share insights.

MSA is part of the Laureate International Universities, the world’s largest international network with more than 80 universities and institutions in 28 countries. This network connects students to universities all over the world with access to great learning opportunities that create a supportive and personalised experience.

International students

The campus has a diverse mix of students, representing over 60 different nationalities. The official currency is the Rand and generally, life in South Africa is relatively more economical in comparison to other English-speaking countries. You could join the campus gymnasium for just R100.00 (US$7.20*) per month, share a meal with a friend from two of our campus restaurants for R30 (US$2.16*) or go to the movies for R70 (US$5.00*).

The favourable exchange rate means that MSA can be a very cost effective study choice for international students.

At MSA, we also run a mentorship programme that teams international students with current students to help you become familiar with the academic, personal and social aspects of life on our campus.

Accommodation

Living on campus is fun and safe. We have 24-hour security and access control/swipe cards, on-site car parking, cooking and laundry facilities, TV and games rooms, lounges and outdoor braai (BBQ) areas.

Student life

South Africa is one of the most diverse and enchanting countries in the world. Exotic combinations of landscapes, people, history and culture offer a larger than life experience for the student in search of a truly unique and inspiring education.

But you won’t need to go far to have fun. We have lots of student clubs, associations and volunteering opportunities for you to get involved in. You could help teach literacy to the children in our local communities, intern with Oxfam, or collect clothing for those in need. Not only will you make lots of new friends, but you will also gain valuable leadership skills and work experience, which is highly valued by potential employers.

Our Student Development department offers a variety of health and wellbeing services, including counselling and development programmes - we can help with anything from health education and life skills (like stress management and budgeting), to career development and interview preparation.
